The History of "Indonesia" name

I wrote this in my old blog at September 28th, 2008.. This story tells about the history of my country name, that is "INDONESIA".. So here are the story!

One of my neighbors is a nurse. And now she is continuing her study for being professional nurse. One time she asked me to help her to write her task about our country history and culture. After that I got inspiration to write my own about Indonesia, my country where I’m living now and spend almost my entire life in this land. And I wish this will give me more inspiration to give more positive impacts to my beloved country and I can introduce more about Indonesia to others.

As we know, Indonesia is the biggest Island Country in the world that located in South East Asia, between Asia and Australia Lands and between Pacific Ocean and India Ocean. Because of Indonesia located between two Lands and two Oceans, so it’s called “Nusantara” (Kepulauan Antara or Islands in between).

And this time I want to write more about the history of Indonesia name, about where it came from and who gave Indonesia as our country name. After reading my father’s collection books and some resources from internet, finally, I found some interesting knowledge about where “Indonesia” came from.

In 1850, people from England named Earl called the citizens of “Indian Archipelago or Malayan Archipelago” with “INDU-NESIONS or Malayanesions”. In the same year, other people from England named Logan changed Indian Archipelago or Indunesions became INDONESIA to make it more applicable with Polinesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia language. For our information, Indonesian ancient came from Yunan, Vietnam. And they moved from Yunan to the south to Malayan Archipelago then finally arrived in Indonesian Islands. Indonesian people have the same basic characteristics and have almost same culture with Polinesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian people and gathered as Austronesian (Oceania) race.

Years later “Indonesia” word can be found in a book with the title “Indonesien” that published in 1884 by Germany people named Bastian.

In The Netherlands Kingdom Era of Indonesia, in a legal way Indonesia called as “Nederlands Oost Indie” (Hindia Belanda). And there were another nick names for Indonesia like “De Oost Indische Archipel” (Kepulauan Hindia Timur/ East India Islands), “Insulinde” (name that given by Multatuli), and “Nusantara” (Kepulauan Antara or Islands in between).

And when we started to have national movements to fighting for our independence day, our people starting to love “Indonesia” as a name for our beloved country and this name was introduced by young people at that time. Then as we know, “Indonesia” word first stated here in October 28th, 1928 in “Youth Promises” (“Sumpah Pemuda”..hehehe..). In Youth Promises we stated that we are one united in one nation: Indonesia and we are one united in one language: Bahasa Indonesia. And today we celebrate “Youth Promises” Day.. So, Happy Youth Promises’ Day, my beloved Indonesia!!!

Ok, that is about the history of where Indonesia name came from. Oh ya, based on Greek language, Indonesia came from 2 words that are “Indos” and “Nesos”. “Indos” means “India”. And “nesos” means “Islands”. So, Indonesia has a meaning: India Islands or Islands that located in India area.

That’s all what I know about the history of Indonesia name. I hope I've done it well.. hehehe.. It’s very interesting and useful for me and hope it will be useful for you too!

Well, that's all the story! And I just found this blog that writes about the history of Indonesia name.. Hope it gives you new insight about Indonesia.. :)
